A voxel is a volume element which represents a value on a three-dimensional grid. In layman's terms, it is a three dimensional pixel. Voxels are frequently used in physical and medical data, and voxel-based images are extensively used in Blood. Most weapons and power-ups are rendered using voxels, as opposed to sprites, which are two-dimensional images. Many other Build engine games used voxels, such as the original Shadow Warrior, though Blood was the first. Ken Silverman continued voxel research with his Voxlap engine, used in Voxelstien 3D. Voxels have been lately popularized in independent games by the mass success of Minecraft, even if the exact technical definition of voxels in that instance has been debated.
